A Nod to the “OG” Susan Colvin on International Women’s Day!

March 8, International Women’s Day, is a time to celebrate all that is WOMAN! And as a day to honor the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of vulva-owners, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the “OG” woman of the pleasure products industry, Susan Colvin.

Some of you may know her — others of you may not. But let me tell you, Susan Colvin is the owner of CalExotics and is an absolute FORCE in the industry.  Not only was she the first-ever woman to own a sex toy company (circa 1994!), but she was also the first to bring bold colors and new technology and invention to the array of sex toys you see on the market today.

Susan’s job as a pioneer in this space wasn’t easy, either.  I mean, can you even imagine? Her journey in navigating the adult novelty space — which was completely male-driven at the time —  was initially met with skepticism, hurdles, sexism and hardship. But she kept on trucking, pushing industry standards to a higher level, offering warranties on products of all price points, and introducing better materials and motors for sex toys. (Thank goodness for those quiet motors, right!?)

Over time, Susan not only earned respect and became accepted by other entrepreneurs in the space, but she became an industry leader. Gosh, it gives me goosebumps to think about it! What an incredible woman.

And Susan’s mission all along? It has been to bring pleasure to ALL people, no matter their gender, race, socioeconomic background and preferences — and this is a job she doesn’t take lightly. Everyone has their own description of what “pleasure” means to them and how it is felt. That sentiment is what has led CalExotics to produce millions of pleasure products over the past 25 years. Her commitment to our sexual health, our pleasure, and our empowerment is REAL, folks, and it’s hella admirable if you ask me!

Please join me in expressing my sincerest gratitude for Susan Colvin and all other women who have helped paved the way. Happy International Women’s Day, all!
